Teaching on Luck, April 2012, Hong Kong
We all consciously or unconsciously long for luck but we don't have a clear idea of what we mean by it. Our human definitions are vague and changeable.
By luck, we generally mean a favourable force or chance that comes about unexpectedly without any known cause and condition. But, what is favourable? Luck is subjective and, in any case, we don't normally have timely information at hand to judge whether something is lucky or not.
However, according to the Buddha, nothing comes accidentally or randomly. Luck depends on conditions, but whether these conditions can be created at will depends on the individual. The buddhist approach to luck is directly linked to one's capacity to understand the truth. So, if something takes us to the truth, we are lucky.
